Probate in Singapore: a 5-minute primer
What probate is, how long it takes in Singapore, and what your executor will actually do.
Probate is the legal process of confirming your will is valid and giving your executor the authority to act on it. Without probate, banks won't release your assets and HDB won't transfer your flat.
How long does it take?
Simple, uncontested probates in Singapore take about 4–8 weeks if the application is filed promptly. Complex estates (multiple properties, businesses, overseas assets) can take 6 months or more.
If you die without a will (intestacy), your family applies for Letters of Administration instead. It generally takes longer and requires sureties.
What your executor will do
Locate the original will, apply for probate, gather and value your assets, pay any debts and taxes, then distribute according to your will. Rain Tree provides every executor with a plain-English playbook so they're not lost.
